A Clinical Review of the Inguinal Hernia


Abstract
341 patients of the inguinal hernia who were admitted to the Dept. of Surgery, S.N.U.H. during the last 10 years from Jan. 1964 to Dec. 1973 were clinicallyy analyzed and the results were as follows.
1. The incidence of the abdominal hernia was about 3.3% of total patients.
2. The incidence of each disease belong to the abdominal hernia was as follows.
Inguinal hernia 341 cases (87.7%), Incisional hernia 28 cases (7.2%), Umbilical hernia
6 cases (1.5%), Internal hernia 6 cases (1.5%), Femoral hernia 4 cases (1.1%), Diaphragmatic
hernia 2 cases (0.5%), Hiatal hernia 2 cases (0.5%
3. Male was predominated over female by the ratio of 9: 1.
4. The incidence-of location revealed that 67.4% in the right side 25.2% hi the left side and 7. 4% bilaterally.
5: Indirect inguinal hernia is the most frequent form of the inguinal hernia consisting of 94.7% and next direct 3.7% and combined form 1.6%.
6. The chief complaints were inguinal mass in 212 cases and scrotal swelling in 150 cases. 7. The incidence of incarceration was 14. 1%, of which 50% was observed in infants below the age of 5.
8. 50.3% of all hernia was repaired using Ferguson method and anatomical repair, 40.3%
by Bassini, 6.1% by McVay, 2. 7% by Halsted 1 and 0. 8% by other method.
9. The mean postoperative hospitalioation date was 6. 1 days.
10. 3 cases (0.8%) were readmitted for re-operation because of recurrence.
11. Postoperative complications took place in 18 cases (4.8%), which is consisted of Wound
infection in 6 cases, subcutaneous hematoma in 3 cases, paralytic ileus in 3 cases, broncho
pneumonia in 2 cases, phlebitis in 2 cases and fever of unknown origin in 1 case.
